The Gulf Coast calendar

When the wood is dry enough to stain

Spring and fall give the best stretches. The humid months are for washing and checks, and we do not promise a stain day in a wet forecast.

  • Plan check-ins

Renewal texts go out. We wash on dry days.

    Jan to Feb

  • Spring stain window

The main stain season: dry stretches and cooler mornings.

    Mar to May

  • Early starts

Washes and checks, started in the morning before the heat and the afternoon storms.

    Jun to Sep

  • Storm watch

We pull ladders and move visits when a named storm is on its way.

    Aug to Oct

  • Fall stain window

A second stain season once the humidity breaks.

    Oct to Nov

  • Wash days

Washes on dry days. Stain waits for the next dry stretch.

The weather rule

We stain when the wood and the forecast are both dry

A stain visit moves when the weather says so. These are the rules we run on.

  • Dry wood first

After a wash the wood dries until it feels dry and the forecast holds. We do not stain damp boards.

  • No stain in a wet forecast

If rain is coming the day we planned, we move to the next dry day and text you.

  • Heat and early starts

In summer we work mornings, and we stop stain work when the boards are too hot to brush.

  • Dew and shade

North-side boards and shaded fences stay damp longest, so they get the extra drying day.

  • Storm season

From June through November we watch the forecast and move visits ahead of a named storm.

  • Your schedule moves too

You get a text with the new day. Wash-and-check visits are more forgiving than stain visits.

Questions

Weather questions

What if it rains?

We do not stain wet wood or in a wet forecast. A visit that falls on a bad day moves to the next dry one, and we text you the new day. Wash-and-check visits are more forgiving than stain visits.

How long does a visit take?

A stain visit on a deck of about 300 square feet is usually two to four working days, with a drying day in the middle. A wash-and-check visit is usually a half day to a day. These are ranges; the weather decides the exact days, and we text you the plan for the week.

Do I need to be home?

No. We need access to the deck and fence, a hose spigot and a place to park. We text before we arrive and when we leave, and we will tell you what we saw.

Pick a season for your deck.

Tell us the month you want and we will say what the weather usually allows.
